New Life

In some ways my life began on my 16th birthday.

This was the day I was released from care.

I did not know where I was going.

"Am I going to a place where girls go who have no family?"

The matron looked at me blankly.

A friend gifted me a pair of white saddle shoes

I took the ugly black shoes and put them

under my bed.

I was leaving my old life behind

Along with the shoes

My heart was racing in anticipation

I filled two garbage bags with my meager belongings

I had no money

I had no idea of where I was going

I did not care.

Jesus my Savior would look after me

He always had and he always would

I was free

I had been released!
